Borussia Dortmund vs. Schalke 04

The Revierderby between Borussia and Schalke, both located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany is the Bundesliga’s first derby dating back to 1925.
Both clubs have had periods of dominance, and neither set of fans is above celebrating the other’s failures. In May 2007, Schalke lost to the derby and by doing so the league lead, for which Borussia made commemorative shirts, and in 2008, Borussia fans celebrated 50 years since Schalke had won the league title. It is considered the fiercest derby in the country and has been characterized by massive crowds, excitement and fanatical supporters since the beginning.

The derby originated in the 1920’s. A.S. Roma was formed when three Roman clubs merged to challenge the dominance of the northern Italian clubs. S.S. Lazio refused to be part of the merger. Since then, these two clubs have competed for the title of the best club in Rome – as it is usually the case with city derbies. The intensity of the rivalry is enormous, often causing fanatical supporters to push the boundaries.

Besiktas vs. Fenerbahce

The Kitalararasi Derbi, also known as the Intercontinental Derby, is a battle between Fenerbahçe SK and Galatasaray SK. It is widely regarded as the biggest football match in Turkey. The first meeting of these football rivalries took place in 1909, so the rivalry between the clubs has existed for about a century. This rivalry has grown into one of the biggest, most intense and often bitter derby.

This tense football rivalry is known as ‘intercontinental’ because Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray are two of the most important Turkish teams in the Asian and European part of Istanbul. The rivalry did not come about for geographical reasons alone: cultures also clashed. Galatasaray is regarded as a petty club founded by students while Fenerbahçe is a true people’s club. Fans of both clubs cannot stand each other – which is a perfect ingredient for the best derbies in football.

Arsenal Vs. Tottenham

Nothing beats a good Premier League derby! The North London Derby is played between the two most famous clubs in London, Arsenal and Tottenham. At their first meet in 1909, there was no rivalry between the two clubs. Arsenal originated in the Woolwich district, which was southeast of London. But when Arsenal moved to Highbury in north London, the Spurs supporters were not happy. Arsenal came into Tottenham’s territory and the stadiums were only 5 km apart. With the arrival of The Gunners to North London, the rivalry was born: The North London Derby!

Birmingham City vs. Aston Villa

The Second City derby has been contested since 1879 and is a fierce rivalry for the fans of the two Birmingham clubs. Birmingham City won its first domestic honor in the 1963 League Cup by beating Aston Villa in the final. Villa did the double over their neighbors in 1980-81 and won the league for the first time since 1910.
This past December, the two met in a League Cup match that was marred by fan violence as Birmingham fans invaded their pitch to confront the visiting fans who through chairs and anything else they could find onto the pitch.

Ajax vs Feyenoord

De Klassieker is a derby of Dutch origin and everyone knows the football rivals: Amsterdam and Rotterdam. De Klassieker is high on the list of the biggest derbies in football, next to FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid (El Clásico) and Glasgow Rangers vs Celtic (The Old Firm Derby).

The first match between those two clubs took place in 1917, but the rivalry really started in 1921. Ajax played first in the First Division, and Feyenoord followed closely behind. When they faced each other on the pitch in Rotterdam, the score was 2-3 for the Amsterdammers. Feyenoord protested and the result was ruled 2-2. Their rivalry has been on fire ever since. Major riots take place before, during and after the matches. Torches, fireworks and sometimes bombs are set off around the event. Will you dare to visit De Klassieker?
